Plus: Is Liquid Glass meh?
Welcome to TC PM! Today we have the details on Mistral's first foray into "reasoning" models; we unpack reactions to the news from the first day of Apple's WWDC; and we dig into the numbers behind Glean's recent funding round. | | | Image Credits: Rafael Henrique/SOPA Images/LightRocket / Getty Images | ๐ง๐ง๐ง๐ง Le reason: French AI startup Mistral announced its first family of "reasoning" AI models. Magistral Small is 24 billion parameters in size and available for download. Magistral Medium is in preview mode in Mistral's Le Chat chatbot, the company's API and third-party partner clouds. ๐ Scaling superintelligence: Meta reportedly has plans to unveil a new AI research lab dedicated to "superintelligence." The company has tapped Scale AI founder and CEO Alexandr Wang to join the lab. Meta is also reportedly investing billions in Scale AI, too. ๐ค High note: Apple ended its WWDC keynote yesterday by literally singing the praises of its developer community. This is interesting, considering Apple has spent the past few years fighting against regulators' attempts to rein in the App Store and failing to deliver on tech like Siri that could help its developers' apps. | | | Image Credits: TechCrunch | | | ๐ Real-world implications: The ongoing cyber incident at United Natural Foods is starting to affect its customers, including Whole Foods. The grocery store chain told its employees this will take several days to resolve and will affect their deliveries and product availability. ๐ค Glean sees green: Enterprise search startup Glean raised $150 million in fresh funds at a $7.2 billion valuation. This is the third round of funding the company has raised since the beginning of 2024. ๐ More operating software: Google couldn't let Apple have all the operating system announcements this week. Starting today, Android 16 is rolling out to Google's Pixel phones, and it includes updates to Google Photos, Google Wallet, and more. ๐ซต On the land or on the sea: Today's episode of StrictlyVC Download features Justin Fanelli, the acting CTO for the U.S. Navy. Fanelli talks about how the Navy is working to bridge the gap between commercial tech and the military, and he offers advice for startups looking to work with the Navy. ๐ Word on the street: Apple announced its new user interface, Liquid Glass, yesterday to mixed reviews. While some people have praised how the tech, which is still in developer beta, makes certain apps look, others have said it makes notifications hard to read. | | | ๐คจ Domestic data: A data broker owned by airlines, including Delta, United, and American Airlines, sold U.S. travelers' domestic flight records to Customs and Border Protection. This data included passenger names, itineraries, and financial details. Is this good? ๐ Discount time: OpenAI announced a stark price cut for its o3 "reasoning" model, slashing the price by 80%. I'm sure a price cut that large is because everything is going well; companies usually drastically drop their prices amid high usage. | | | Image Credits: TechCrunch | ๐ Trying again: Social media giant Snap announced that it's releasing consumer AR smart glasses called Specs. The company said these glasses will start shipping in 2026 but was light on other details, like how much these glasses will cost. | | | Featured jobs from CrunchBoard | | | Has this been forwarded to you?
