Tumblr says it's getting rid of 'adult content'

THE DAILY CRUNCH
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 4 2018 By Anthony Ha

Tumblr cracks down on adult content, Quora announces a big data breach and Apple highlights the Best of 2018. Here's your Daily Crunch for December 4.

1. Tumblr will delete all porn from its platform

On December 17, Tumblr will be banning porn, a.k.a. "adult content," from its site and encouraging users to flag that content for removal. Existing adult content will be set to a "private mode" viewable only to the original poster.

It looks like implementation could be bumpy. Following the announcement, Tumblr users have been sharing screenshots of non-pornographic content that's been flagged already. (Most of it isn't even particularly risqué.)

2. Quora says 100 million users may have been affected by data breach

In an email sent to users today, as well as a blog post by CEO Adam D'Angelo, the company said a "malicious third party" gained unauthorized access to Quora's systems on Friday. Its internal security teams and a "leading digital forensics and security firm" are currently investigating the breach.

3. Apple announces its 'Best of 2018' lists across apps, games, music, podcasts and more

According to Apple, the best iPhone app of 2018 was the iPhone version of the popular Procreate drawing app.

4. Marriott's breach response is so bad, security experts are filling in the gaps — at their own expense

Often after a data breach, scammers will capitalize on the news cycle by tricking users into turning over their private information with their own stream of fake messages and websites.

5. Freeletics raises $45M for its AI-powered mobile fitness coach

The app, which offers fitness content and AI-powered training plans tailored to individual users, initially focused on Germany but has since grown in popularity across Europe and in the U.S.

6. Oath agrees to pay $5M to settle charges it violated children's privacy

Our corporate overlords have agreed to pay the largest-ever penalty under the COPPA children's privacy law.

7. Will Uber gobble up Lime or fly off with Bird?

Lime and Bird, which both operate fleets of electric scooters around the world, are both said to be in talks with the ride-hailing behemoth about a possible acquisition, as first reported by The Information.
