THE DAILY CRUNCH
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12 2018 By Anthony Ha

The European Parliament passes a controversial copyright bill, Plex Cloud announces its shutdown and Apple is about to show off some new phones. Here's your Daily Crunch for September 12, 2018.

1. European parliament gives thumbs up to controversial copyright reforms

The European Parliament voted to back controversial proposals to reform online copyright — including supporting an extension to cover snippets of publishers' content, and to make platforms that hold significant amounts of content liable for copyright violations by their users.

Julia Reda, a critic of the proposals, warned that they would result in platforms imposing upload filters that will catch "perfectly legal content like parodies and memes", as well as imposing a pointless EU "link tax".

2. Live from Apple's iPhone event

Stay tuned to this liveblog (or tomorrow's Daily Crunch) to see what Apple announces at today's event.

3. Plex Cloud will shut down November 30 due to technical challenges

Plex Cloud, launched in fall 2016, was meant to serve as a way for Plex customers to save their files to online storage services like OneDrive, Dropbox and Google Drive, instead of having to host their files locally on their own machines or on network-attached storage devices.

4. Apple, AT&T, Amazon, Google among tech giants called to Senate Commerce Committee

It's time for another round of watching tech executives get grilled by lawmakers.

5. Wasabi just landed $68M to upend cloud storage

When you see a story about cloud storage, chances are you yawn and move on — but Wasabi, a startup from the folks who brought you Carbonite backup, might make you pause. That's because the company claims to have found a cheaper, faster way to store data.

6. Zoox is offering autonomous rides in SF this week

In partnership with the Fairmont hotel in San Francisco, Zoox will transport select guests of the Global Climate Action Summit in its self-driving Toyota Highlander test cars.

7. I watched HBO's Tinder-shaming doc 'Swiped' so you don't have to

The "I" in question is Sarah Perez, who says, "There's one scene where a young woman is so wasted, it's hard to believe she gave the filmmaker informed consent to use her footage."
