The Daily Crunch 11/24/16 Happy Thanksgiving! It's holiday time, but there's still stuff happening out there. Here's what you need to know in the Turkey Edition™ of The Daily Crunch for November 24, 2016. 1. Reddit CEO is editing user posts Getting trolled is no fun, but it's still weird to see Reddit's CEO crack under trolling pressure and edit user comments. Steve Huffman copped to doing this in the Donald Trump subreddit after supporters consistently piled on with personal insults. The subreddit's behavior is vile, to be sure, but to see the top executive at the company descend into the muck and violate what you'd think was one of Reddit's top principles (free speech) with a surreptitious modification of another's comment is pretty bad. Maybe he'll get away with it because of the Thanksgiving news burial timing? 
2. Facebook probably doesn't stand a chance in China, even if it bows to censorship We heard yesterday that Facebook was looking to potentially provide a censorship tool to third-parties to allow it to operate in China, but our own Jon Russell points out that even if it bends on ethics, it's still probably not going to see huge growth in China. So maybe just refuse to budge on censorship and take the moral "W" on your scorecard FB. 3. Walking the Spectacle line People are lining up for sunglasses. What's it like to wait in line for $130 video glasses? And who's waiting for them? Here's a survey – Jordan and our video producer Veanne Cao got cold talking to the people doing the waiting for Spectacles so we didn't have to. 4. The UK wants to stop all but the most vanilla of porn From the people that brought you Victorian sex hang-ups, a new proposed law to block porn sites that don't fit a very strict, wholly unrealistic perspective of sex. Great, good job Uk you're doing terrific this year. 5. Here's what the US doesn't want your phone to do while driving If your phone just couldn't do certain things while you were driving would you be okay with that? That's what NHTSA wants OEMs to help make happen by accepting new proposed voluntary guidelines. Seems like a tough sell to phone makers to build this kind of thing in by default. 6. Your headphones could be listening Not a great bit of news – security researchers have found its possible to turn headphones connected to a PC into microphones for listening in surreptitiously. It's just a proof-of-concept, but it's a worrying one. Stay vigilant, and go do the turkey time stuff. |
