What to expect from CES 2019

CES is just around the corner, Tesla is starting 2019 in the red and hackers are using dormant Twitter accounts to spread terrorist propaganda. Here's your Daily Crunch for January 2, 2019.

1. What to expect from CES 2019 

It's tough to believe that CES is already here. The five-day show has changed a lot in recent years, with major tech companies opting to make announcements on their own stages. 5G will be the centerpiece of the show, but keep an eye out for major announcements in transportation and in TV resolution.

2. Tesla stock price crashes 10% on vehicle price cut, missed delivery estimates

After failing to meet Wall Street's delivery estimates of the Model 3, Tesla's stock took a big dip this morning. The company also announced it's taking $2,000 off the price of the Model S, Model X and Model 3.

3. Hackers are spreading Islamic State propaganda by hijacking dormant Twitter accounts

Hackers are using a decade-old flaw to target and hijack dormant Twitter accounts to spread terrorist propaganda, TechCrunch has learned.

4. Chinese app developers have invaded India 

For anyone who has been watching the Indian technology scene in recent years, this "Chinese app store invasion" will be of little surprise, although the speed of change has been unexpected.

5. 2018 ushered in a 'potential space renaissance'

Venture capital dollars are fueling a new boom in aerospace innovation, with firms investing more than $2.3 billion in new companies over the course of 2018, according to data from Crunchbase.

6. What to expect in cybersecurity in 2019 

Expect more data leaks and exposures — not just breaches in 2019.

7. FCC greenlights Google's radar-based gesture tech 'Soli'

Google's Soli Project could make touchscreens look obsolete in the coming years.

Amazon plans a Whole Foods expansion

Amazon plans to expand Whole Foods, New Year's fireworks go green in Taipei and we look back at 2018's biggest tech headlines. Here's your Daily Crunch for December 31, 2018.

1. Report: Amazon is planning a Whole Foods expansion to benefit Prime Now

According to a story in The Wall Street Journal, the goal is to put more customers within range of Amazon's Prime Now service.

Currently, Prime Now offers two-hour delivery in more than 60 U.S. cities, and 30-minute-plus grocery pickup in nearly 30 cities. Amazon is reportedly planning to expand those services to almost all its 475 Whole Foods stores.

2. A look inside the Taipei 101 New Year's Eve fireworks show as it goes green

As one of the tallest LEED-certified buildings, Taipei 101 often serves as a case study for how landmark skyscrapers can reduce their carbon footprint, and it has been taking steps to reduce pollution from the fireworks show while making sure it's still a spectacle.

3. MIT researchers are now 3D printing glass

The system uses a closed, heated box that holds the melted glass and another thermally controlled box where it prints the object, producing clear glass structures that can be used for decoration or building.
